Aikan key performance figures are as follows:
AIKAN PERFORMANCE |
|---|
1 tonne of average organic household waste results in: |
80 m3 biogas (approx. 70 percent methane)
|
350 kg of compost
|
350 kg structural organic material for reuse |
(Average figures. Specific output depends on waste type and purity)
Scaling up performance
In most countries, biogas potential from household waste is far from being fully utilised. In Denmark, full utilisation of slurry and municipal household waste could substitute 25 percent of the country’s current natural gas consumption. In such a scenario, biogas production from slurry would account for 20 percent, with the remaining 5 percent coming from organic household waste.
While the potential for using household waste is lower in terms of potential production capacity, it is generally easier to utilise with economically attractive results. The main reason for this is that the biogas potential of organic household waste is 10 times higher than slurry (measured by weight).
An Aikan showcase plant in the north-western part of Zealand, Denmark has processed municipal household waste (MSW) from 8-10 municipalities, since 2003.
An AIKAN system can be integrated with conventional biogas plants and monitored through the AIKAN monitoring system. In this way, conventional biogas plants can be upgraded to manage waste with a larger proportion of non-biological waste.
Performance and stability
The Aikan Technology has been developed by biologists and farmers with offset in biology. Part of the concept is a deliberate choice of standard technologies and proven waste industry and farm machinery which is easy to repair and replace with a minimum of down time. This ensures a very high plant availability which improves economic performance.
